A few months ago, I knew something had to change. My health was at its lowest – and that’s saying something considering I have rrms.

My energy levels were at an all time low, I was horribly depressed about how I felt, and I had no vitality. I was forcing myself to eat and had to call in every other shift at my relatively new job.

If you’ve been keeping up with Stumble Pup, you’d have seen here and here where I discussed the protocol I try to model my diet after. I call it Oms-ish because while I do try my hardest to stick with it, I’m not going to freak out if I mess up. It’s not the end of the world to accidentally have some dairy or go over my saturated fat intake.

But four months ago, I watched an online seminar by Terry Wahls. The next day, my bought us a blender and  I started incorporating superfood smoothies in my diet.

Aloe plants with superfood smoothie ingredients.

Not trying to be dramatic, but these legit changed e  v e r y t h i n g for me.

At the time, I was sick, listless, and willing to try just about anything to feel alive again. Just a couple days into them, I already felt better. I had more energy and my mental clarity improved dramatically. My skin grew clearer and brighter, and I felt like I had me back.

In the past five months, with the help of my blender and lots of organic foods, I’ve been able to take my life back.

I went from missing work, going to way too many dr visits with sooo few answers, to how I’m feeling now. Which is a quite a bit different, to say the least.

I’m back in school, pursuing my bachelors degree. Working two different jobs, going to the gym, and killing it. I’m actually running for the first time in my life. I feel better now than I did prior to the big flare last year. My skin stays clear, and my energy continues to improve.

I’m not saying these are a cure all – nothing is. But what in the world could you lose by adding super foods and tons of nutrients into your diet?

I modeled my smoothies after Dr. Wahls “9 cup approach”, and broke it down into thirds. I make sure I get a cup each of greens, sulfurs, and color in every smoothie. On top of that, I add various things to them to make them tastier and even better for me. More on that below!

Now…what you all came here for – 5 Tips for Tasty Superfood Smoothies plus 2 bonus tasty recipes!

5 Tips for Tasty Superfood Smoothies

1. Choose a Good Blender

Most avid smoothie makers swear by the Ninja smoothie machine. I’ve seen it in person, and it is badass. However, it also comes with a ticket price that reflects that. Since starting this smoothie habit, I have used a cheap Oster blender you can find here. I’ve replaced the blade once since I’ve had it – the motor is great, and a replacement costs $20 every four months or so, so I’ll stick with it. Maybe next lifetime, Ninja.

Ok, little update – I have since purchased this Ninja system, and it has been worth every. single. little. penny. I spent on it. Seriously, guys, it takes out all the guess work with my smoothies. If you’re in the market, and can afford it, I cannot recommend it enough!

2. Use Avocado to Tamp Down Greens

Avocado is a MUST if you’re using mixed or dandelion greens! They can give a slightly spicy taste to a smoothie I can’t stand. Popping half an avocado in there really smooths it out. Not to mention the awesome benefits of avocado and the healthy fats!

3. Blending vs. Juicing

Most of your produce, you can pop right in the blender and smoothie it up. However, some cannot, and I’m specifically talking celery. The little strings will never blend fully, and it’s a texture I can’t get over. Celery is the only thing I juice, though. Blending the whole plant means you get all the fiber and nutrients you intended to!

4. Saving Money? Count Me In

I mix fresh and frozen produce for various reasons. On pages 124-125 of The Wahls Protocol, she lists the best options for choosing produce and avoiding pesticides. I use fresh organic greens, citrus, pear, and avocado. Those are the easiest to get near me according to her list. All the rest, I use frozen. This saves me a ton of money too!

5. Just Use the Straw

Use a wide tip reusable straw. We all know with ms comes swallowing issues – the easiest way for me to consume my smoothies is through a wide tip reusable straw like this one. Just get one for your smoothies. You can find my fave set here. You’ll thank me later.
